Looe hosts a Voluntary Marine
Reserve, from Millendreath, across Looe and around Looe Island (St George's
Island). The Island is a fantastic dive. Obviously attained depth depends upon
how far you dive from the Island, but some of the best dives are between 10m
and the surface, ideal for Open Water Divers and the snorkeller. Historically,
over the years, many ships have periled on the Ranney Rocks on the seaward
side of the Island. This always gives a sense of adventure when joining on one
of our Island Dives. Jon remembers diving on the Ranneys in the late 1970's
and viewing two cannons in a large gulley. One of the cannons was definitely
retrieved in the late 70's but we do not know about the other. Unfortunately,
Jon can't remember where the gulley is (he was only 10 at the time!).
The centre's boats frequently run
trips to the Island and Looe Divers' Club is involved with a survey of the
Island. Looe Island is the heart of Looe's Voluntary Marine Conservation Area
(VMCA).
